Whatchu Talkin' 'Bout, Haters?

So PETA issued this neat graphic on their website. Click here for a larger version. I don't condone PETA's usual body-exploiting tactics, but this graphic is pretty rad.

What I find most interesting, though, are the freaking retarded comments left by people on the webpage :) Why you gots to put us vegans down or think we're not all there in the head? I keep seeing this image of vegans as like adolescent in our mentality, like we "don't get it" or have been lead like sheep to veganism. We made the choice for ourselves, thank you very f-ing much, and don't need any jibber-jabber nonsense about how we can't make decisions for ourselves.

There is SUCH a stereotype of vegans in the United States. Case in point, the first comment ("Mark"):
"I would rather live one day as a strong, happy human eating a natural diet than 90 years as a weak starving vegan eating livestock feed."

Um, vegans can be chubby, too. Hello?!? (*points to self*) I have, however, lost about 20 lbs. since going vegan a year ago. I still eat food that might be considered unhealthy for me, like chips for breakfast...I, by being a vegan, am not a "God of Health" by any means. There are vegans out there who love their green juice for breakfast, but they are by no means "weak" OR "starving."

Mark, sir, you are a tool and too easily drawn into stereotypes promoted by the industries we are trying to avoid.

And to those of you on the comment board blabbing about how no one could be 100% vegan, you are correct!
But that is NOT the point of being vegan.
In my view, it is to actively try to eliminate what you can. I am still working on this, myself. If vegans tried eliminating 100% of the dastardly animal products in our stuff, it would drive us INSANE, and then you'd really have something to bitch about.

Ahem.

Have a nice weekend!
Jes

  1. I only just recently learned about the water aspect of it all. I was floored. I'm so anal about the water consumption / wasting factor. It's one more reason I won't ever be going back to meat and dairy. It made me feel even better about my decision.

And as far as strong, it's only now after getting all that crap out of my diet that I feel like I have the energy to work out. I've been riding 14 hilly miles a day post-knee surgery and building up muscles that haven't been used in over a year. It feels great.
