thankfulness, day 1: my husband

Sadly, Vegan MoFo 2012 is part of the past now. I know I had a blast cooking, taking photographs, sharing Meatless Meals, and perusing the blogs of other MoFo-ers out there. And I don't want it to end!

So I'm going to attempt a Month of Thankfulness during November. I've never been big about Thanksgiving (especially not during an entire month), but I do enjoy the feeling of thankfulness that comes with it. It's a holiday in which we reflect on our relationships with others and with the world, and I'd like to use this time to flesh out 30 of the things and people I am thankful for in my life.

First up this month--my husband, Philip. It almost seems as though our worlds were intended to collide at some point. 10 years ago, I was a shy girl, sitting in his father's senior year Economics class. Philip used to drop by during my class to visit with his dad and borrow books to read (he's a voracious reader!). I thought he was cute in the turtleneck sweaters he'd wear but completely unattainable for me. He was several years older than me and was out in the world. His dad used to use Philip's financial woes as teaching tools for my Econ class. But being 17 years old, I thought he was cute nonetheless.

Then I got to meet him on December 31, 2003 at a party he and his friends threw at their loft. We met in their kitchen very briefly, maybe less than 5 minutes, and then my friends and I ended up leaving the party. Philip was still cute and was wearing glitter eye shadow (and another turtleneck sweater, I think).

Fast forward to spring break 2004, a few months later, and we ended up actually meeting. I was invited to another of their famous parties by a mutual friend, and by the end of the evening Philip had asked me for my MSN screen name (good lord, times have changed!). We followed up with awesome conversations, book recommendations, music sharing, some time together at my college, and a trip to Kansas City for my birthday. And BOOM! We were together :)

I find that I am really thankful for him more and more as time goes by. Here are some of my favorite things about Philip:

He has an awesome sense of humor.

He's a fantastic artist, though he feigns ignorance about his abilities.

He's loves animals, though his allergies get to him.

And he's great with children, even though he says he doesn't like them. I think he'll be a fabulous dad some day.

I'm thankful that he's always there for me but is cool with me doing my own thing at times. Yes, we're not perfect or always nice to each other (Sundays are usually our "angry" day of the week), but I care for him and he cares for me. And sometimes that's just what you need.

{i swear i'm thankful...}

{i mean it...}

What are you thankful for in your life?

Jes
