Vegan MoFo, Day 17: Spicy Vegan Juicy Lucy

Unless you've been living under a rock (or don't have cable), you have probably heard of the Juicy Lucy Burger up in Minneapolis. Two restaurants are at perpetual war over who serves the best Juicy Lucy. In my pre-gan days, I watched the guy from Man Vs. Food eat both, and I've wanted to try them since (that seems to be a reoccurring thing this month...Thank you to Vegan MoFo for fulfilling my food dreams!).

And because I'm a total fuck-tard and failed to realize I didn't have the card in the Nikon when I was taking photos PRE-eating...you only get to see the "juicy" part :)

Spicy Vegan Juicy Lucy, AKA...

"Ouch Burning In My Mouth But So Good!"
serves 2 burgers

burgers
1 cup cooked black beans
1/3 cup dry bread crumbs
1 tbsp. nooch
1 tsp. vegan Worcestershire
1 tsp. cumin
1/2 tsp. onion powder
1/2 tsp. smoked paprika
S&P
1/4 cup Daiya pepper jack

Earth Balance
sliced onion
lettuce leaves (romaine, butter or red leaf)
kaiser bun

spicy mayo
1/4 cup Vegenaise
1/2 tsp. roasted jalapeno sauce (see below)

In a mixing bowl, mash up the black beans (I used a potato masher) until mushy. Add the bread crumbs and seasonings, and mix up. You might want about a tsp. of the cooking liquid/liquid from can for the black bean mixture, just to make sure it isn't so crumbly. Form 1/4 of black bean mixture into a flat patty, lay it on a plate, and put some Daiya pepper jack into the middle of the patty. Form another flat patty of the same size, and place it over the Daiya, mushing the sides of the patty together. Repeat with one more burger patty.

In a pan, lightly brown the sliced kaiser bun in Earth Balance. Remove bun from pan. Add more Earth Balance and the patties. Cook until the sides are crispy, about 7-10 minutes over medium-high heat.

For the mayo: Preheat oven to 425 deg. F. Rub some jalapenos with oil, and put them in the oven in a pan. Turn every 5 minutes or so and roast until the skin pulls away from the pepper. Remove from oven and allow to cool. Strip peppers of skin, stem, and seeds. Pulse peppers in a food processor until they form a slightly-chunky paste (or mince roasted peppers, if you don't have a food processor). This paste can be stored in the fridge. I did all of this earlier in the day.

Add 1/2 tsp. of the roasted jalapeno paste to Vegenaise and mix together. You can add more paste if you want a nuclear explosion in your mouth (yeah, I tried the pepper paste after making it and burned the crap out of my mouth!).

Spread bun halves with spicy mayo mixture, add 1 leaf of lettuce and the cooked patty, and top with onion slices.

Super. Yum. Spicy. Goodness. It's a punch in the kissa.

  1. I hadn't heard of a Juicy Lucy until last week when I read a MoFo post about it. The burgers sound delicious, I love the mixture of ingredients.
